Where to stay

Choose the base before you choose the hotel.

Lake Garda towns are not interchangeable. The right base depends on transport, food, beaches, mountains, ferries, and how much driving you want.

Quick Town Match

TownBest if you want
BardolinoFood, wine, relaxed evenings, and a useful Verona-side base.
GardaA classic lakefront town that is compact and easy to like.
LaziseA pretty walled town, family convenience, beaches, and nearby theme parks.
Peschiera del GardaTrain access, ferries, buses, family logistics, and south-lake practicality.
SirmioneIconic views, castle, Roman ruins, thermal water, and crowds you plan around.
Desenzano del GardaTrain access, restaurants, shopping, and more evening life.
MalcesineMonte Baldo, castle, mountain views, hiking, and a dramatic lake setting.
Riva del GardaOutdoor sports, mountains, beaches, cycling, and the northern lake.
SaloElegant west-shore promenade, culture, and slower lunches.
Limone sul GardaCliffs, lemon houses, lake views, and boat-arrival scenery.
Gardone RivieraVittoriale, Heller Garden, villas, and a greener cultured stay.

My Simple Rule

If this is a first trip and you want food, wine, lakefront walks, and easy Verona-side exploring, start by comparing Bardolino, Garda, Lazise, and Peschiera. If you want mountains, look north to Malcesine or Riva. If you want the west shore, compare Salo, Gardone, and Limone.

Do Not Ignore Transport

A beautiful hotel in the wrong base can waste a lot of time. If you do not have a car, Peschiera and Desenzano are the easiest starting points. If you do have a car, check parking before you book in the busiest towns.

Hotels, Condos, Apartments, and Villas

The town comes first, then the type of stay. A hotel is easier if you want a prepared breakfast, service, spa time, a restaurant, and less daily admin. An apartment, condo, villa, or rental house can make more sense for families, longer stays, making breakfast at home, kitchens, laundry, parking, and a slower rhythm.

Lakefront rentals can be excellent, but check noise, stairs, parking, and whether the photos hide a busy road. Hillside places can have better views and calmer evenings, but they usually need a car or at least a realistic attitude about walking uphill after dinner.

Villa Cordevigo

I moved the full Villa Cordevigo recommendation into the new Places to Stay section, where it belongs with hotels and individual stays. Short version: I stayed there for two weeks, loved the service, spa, restaurant, breakfast, staff, and wines, and still go back to buy bottles.
